LET'S GO FOR IT

Heck with it – let’s go for it. That sub-2:50 goal I wrote down in the dead of winter is still in-play. All I have to do is go out fast and not stop until I cross the finish line. You know, mind over matter and all that jazz.

So I think I’ll go out in 1:25 for the first half…no wait, 1:23 – that way I can bank some time. That strategy always works. That way, when I hit the hills at mile 20 I’ll have a whole 2 minutes from which to dip into during the last 6 miles. 20 seconds a mile should be enough of a cushion, right?

Quote of the day;

“Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired. When you were younger the mind could make you dance all night, and the body was never tired…You’ve always got to make the mind take over and keep going.” – George Patton, U.S. Army General and 1912 Olympian

  2. I'm detecting a bit of sarcasm. "Well, you should, because I'm laying it on pretty thick"

    How many people, after writing down their goals at the beginning of the year, actually achieve the goals they write down?

    If your body only has a 3:05 marathon in it, all the willpower in the world won't help you run a 2:50.

    Sometimes, you just have to accept that injuries, lack or training, other priorities (family), prevented you from achieving what you set out to do. Life gets in the way sometimes. Doesn't mean you are a failure. Just means you are human.

  3. I'm confused here. 2 days ago you said "I can almost guarantee that I won’t be in a position at halfway to break 3 hours" and now you're talking sub-2:50? Maybe you just thought that nobody was paying attention? Hope your taper goes well and the madness passes soon ;-)

  4. It's okay to go out fast, just not stupid fast. You're no Sammy Wanjiro.

    I would shoot for a 1:27:30 half and if you feel good stick with 6:40 pace. If not then run 7:00 pace the rest of the way and enjoy the second half.
